Abusive Head Trauma including Shaken Baby Syndrome is a serious form of preventable childhood physical abuse that results in brain injury to an infant or young child. This syndrome is most prevalent among children under 5 years old, and the risk is greatest for children in the first year of life. Shaken Baby Syndrome is caused by violent shaking or a sharp blow.<\/p>\n

A child with suspected abusive head injury, after being examined by the pediatrician, should be referred to the ophthalmologist. The incidence of abusive head injuries in children is highest in the first years of age and less frequent from the age of 3 years. The probability of retinal hemorrhage attributable to abusive head injury is very high.<\/p>\n
